Therapeutic Riding
What is Therapeutic Riding?
Therapeutic riding allows children and adults to address a range of challenges in ways that are both therapeutic and fun. Each weekly lesson includes time on the horse and time with the horse, to facilitate a partnership that is compassionate, respectful, and restorative.

At Stride Ahead, we offer Therapeutic Riding lessons to persons with a broad range of disabilities. Children and adults are taught horsemanship skills that begin with grooming, leading, and tacking, and end with mounted activities, games, and skill practice.
Lessons are taught by nationally certified instructors (PATH) who help provide a safe, fun, and creative experience. Lessons are tailored to each student's specific goals and needs.
Therapeutic Riding improves strength, balance, flexibility, body awareness, motor coordination, communication, social interaction, and self-confidence in an environment that is both stimulating and supportive.
Developing a compassionate and respectful relationship with horses is an important aspect of our riding program. Many students achieve a level of independence that they might not otherwise experience without the assistance of a trusted equine companion.
The challenges Therapeutic Riding can address include ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders including Down Syndrome, learning disabilities, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, paraplegia, sensory integration disorders, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and others.
Three times per month, Stride Ahead Provides therapy sessions for Shepherd Center clients. These sessions are overseen by a Shepherd Center occupational therapist or physical therapist. We are honored to be trusted with these clients suffering from spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.
For riders unable to pay the full cost of lessons, sliding scale payment options are available. Inquire for details.
